How to Choose the Right Dart Weight

Why Dart Weight Matters

Dart weight is one of the single biggest factors affecting your throw. Too heavy and your arm tires quickly, causing your trajectory to drop. Too light and you may struggle with consistency and control. Getting the weight right for your natural throwing style is the foundation of accurate, enjoyable darts.

Standard darts range from 16g to 23g, with the vast majority of recreational and competitive players settling somewhere between 18g and 22g.

How Weight Affects Your Game

  • Lighter darts (16g–18g) – Suit players with a faster, more relaxed throwing motion. They travel quickly and require less effort, making them popular with soft-tip players and beginners. However, they can be harder to control in a windy environment and are more sensitive to inconsistencies in your grip.
  • Mid-weight darts (19g-20g) – The sweet spot for most players. This range offers a balance of control and feel, and is where the majority of professional players compete. A great starting point if you are unsure.
  • Heavier darts (21g-23g) – Favour players with a slower, more deliberate throwing style. The extra mass gives a sense of solidity and stability in the hand. Popular with players who prefer a pendulum-style throw.

How to Find Your Ideal Weight

The best way to find your weight is to try different darts in person. Here is a simple method:

  1. Start in the mid-range — pick up a set of 19g or 20g darts and throw 20-40 darts.
  2. Pay attention to where your darts land relative to where you aimed. If they consistently land high, try going lighter. If they land low, try heavier.
  3. Notice how your arm feels after a long session. Fatigue suggests your darts may be too heavy.
  4. Consider your playing format — soft-tip machines in Singapore are set for darts up to 23g, so soft-tip players should stay within that range.
